While the supplement and drug market dominates the treatment of diabetes, sometimes herbal solutions can be a helpful alternative to be used in combination with those supplements. There are lots of different herbal remedies that a diabetic can choose to look into if interested and this is a review of a couple options. Aloe Vera and Magnesium are both herbal remedies for diabetes.
Both have shown that there are possible advantages to taking these home diabetes remedies to help with diabetes. Aloe Vera has long been known as an excellent herbal remedy for healing wounds, burns, cuts, sunburns, skin infections, and many other skin conditions. Aloe Vera gel is the gel that is extracted from the leaves of the aloe vera plant. Aloe vera's effects on skin conditions have been proven to be beneficial; however the research done into aloe vera and diabetes hasn't been extensive enough to get a consensus from experts on its effectiveness.
Although not unanimous, many experts believe aloe vera can help to naturally lower blood sugar levels. There have also been other studies that have shown that aloe vera has several active phytosterol compounds found in its gel that can lower glucose levels, along with glycosylated hemoglobin levels. Magnesium is another option when looking to control your diabetes with natural remedies. Magnesium is a mineral found in many green vegetables, seeds, nuts, and whole grain foods.
If you are looking to increase your magnesium and none of these foods appeal to you, you can also get magnesium supplements to take. Naturally, magnesium has hundreds of functions in your body including muscle and nerve function, blood pressure, heart rhythm, bone health, immune function, and the benefit to diabetics, regulating blood sugar levels. Like aloe vera, magnesium research regarding the benefit to diabetics has been limited and once again there are differing opinions on its effectiveness.
Studies have shown that an increase in magnesium can increase insulin sensitivity and lower fasting blood sugar levels. There have also been studies that have shown that low magnesium hurts a person's blood glucose control and that once magnesium has been properly introduced to their system you can see improved insulin resistance. Unfortunately, magnesium supplements can also come with some negative side effects. Some magnesium supplements list diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, muscle weakness, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, and irregular heart rate as some side effects.
You should note that these side effects are usually only seen with very high levels of magnesium. With the limited amount of research done into the effectiveness of magnesium for diabetics it is hard to say whether this is a legitimate answer to your type 2 diabetes. Unfortunately, both these herbal remedies have had limited research done on them. Until further studies are done it is hard to say whether these will have a positive influence on your diabetes. The good news is that there is little downside to trying these options as aloe vera has no side effects and magnesium when taken properly is unlikely to have any either.
